Enhancing Fujitsu brand through promotion and protection of Fujitsu’s Technologies
I am the Director of Fujitsu Intellectual Property Center (FIPC), an intellectual property (“IP”) team remotely located in the Washington DC area, near the USPTO. I joined Fujitsu in 2008 to assist in FIPC formation. Our team is tasked with patent promotion and other IP-related activities for Fujitsu companies and research facilities outside of Japan, including North America, Europe, India, and Israel. Such activities include harvesting and protecting innovations from global Fujitsu research facilities via patent filing and prosecution, managing Fujitsu’s patent portfolios, IP training for Fujitsu researchers and IP personnel, negotiating research and joint IP agreements, and preparing legal opinions on patent infringement and invalidity. I am also a member of Fujitsu’s IP Center of Excellence which is tasked with developing and implementing Fujitsu’s global IP strategies.
Prior to joining Fujitsu, I spent 9 years in private law practice in the U.S. and 6 years as a USPTO Patent Examiner. My prior experiences made me realize that I wanted to be closer to innovations when and where they happened. At Fujitsu, I have gained a deeper technical knowledge of its technologies and understood the strategic and business reasons behind my work of protecting Fujitsu’s innovations in such technologies. I found much satisfaction helping technical researchers express their innovations to enhance Fujitsu’s products and services. It is a joy for me to see their pride when they realize that Fujitsu values their work through protection of their innovations with patent, trademark, and/or copyright registration. I enjoy the camaraderie and teamwork with colleagues in Legal & IP Unit in negotiating and preparing joint research agreements between Fujitsu and universities and other companies to further advance Fujitsu’s technologies. My active participation in the American IP Law Association (“AIPLA”) provides me with networking opportunities in the US and worldwide, which allows me to stay abreast of new IP law and regulations that I can share with my colleagues in Legal & IP Unit. Together, we work to ensure that Fujitsu takes full advantage of the available legal avenues to protect Fujitsu’s IP rights worldwide, enhance the Fujitsu brand as a technology company and its business, while also enhancing society with sustainability.
