Fsas Technologies and Telefónica to Install the MareNostrum 5 Expansion at the BSC to Boost European Artificial Intelligence

• The consortium formed by the operator and Fsas Technologies will lead the supply, deployment, and integration of the facilities, enabling startups and scaleups to test and develop their Artificial Intelligence projects.
• The initiative will ensure that, through the BSC and via a competitive access model, European SMEs have access to the computing capacity required to accelerate AI adoption and compete on equal footing with companies from other continents.
• The expansion of MareNostrum 5 will support the AI Factories currently being promoted across Europe, with the aim of safeguarding the continent’s technological independence in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

Barcelona, March 02, 2026

Fsas Technologies and Telefónica have been selected by EuroHPC JU to supply, deploy, and integrate the expansion of the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, located at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), a strategic infrastructure aimed at strengthening the European Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem.

The new infrastructure will expand the services of the BSC’s current supercomputer and has been designed to enable European startups and scaleups to train their AI projects through a competitive selection process, given the particularly high computing demands required during testing and development phases.

Fsas Technologies and Telefónica will integrate the end-to-end solution and provide support and operational services throughout the entire project lifecycle, through July 2029. The technological proposal incorporates cutting-edge technology, along with advanced network architectures, security solutions, and management tools to ensure the efficient, scalable, and secure use of the platform, including remote access beyond the BSC facilities.

Through this project, Fsas Technologies and Telefónica further strengthen their position as leading strategic partners in the deployment of advanced Artificial Intelligence infrastructures in Europe, combining connectivity, computing, and critical platform operations capabilities. The initiative reinforces both companies’ roles as key enablers of a competitive European AI ecosystem aligned with the European Union’s technological sovereignty principles.

In addition to increasing computing capacity to serve all European AI Factories, the BSC will make available, through the BSC AI Factory, a broad portfolio of advanced services and resources. These include support from scientific experts specialized in supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence, as well as advisory and ecosystem-building services to facilitate and accelerate business adoption of these technologies. As the infrastructure will allow remote access, reinforced cybersecurity layers will also be implemented to guarantee secure and controlled usage.

The project contributes to narrowing the technological gap between Europe and other major markets by providing startups and scaleups with supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence capabilities comparable to those available to competitors in the United States. This new infrastructure at the BSC will enable European companies to compete on equal terms with their global counterparts, fostering access to strategic resources for innovation.

The consortium formed by Fsas Technologies and Telefónica has been awarded a €128.79 million contract funded by The European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU). The project is part of the AI Continent programme, the European Union’s initiative to develop a competitive and sovereign AI sector. One of its core pillars is the creation of AI Factories—public infrastructures that provide advanced supercomputing capabilities and scientific support to European startups, scaleups, and SMEs, with a clear objective: to lower entry barriers and enable them to train AI models on equal footing with international competitors.
