To address social challenges while creating value through its business, Fujitsu has revised its materiality with a view toward 2035. This article explains the background to the revision, including Management Vision 2035 and changes in the social landscape. It also outlines the concept behind the new materiality and how it will be integrated with business strategies and corporate guidelines to create value for customers and society.
Why Fujitsu Pursues Sustainability Management
The business environment is changing dramatically due to increasingly severe climate change, heightened geopolitical risks, and rapid technological advances, including AI. To achieve sustainable growth while responding to these changes, companies must understand the relationship between their activities and social challenges and incorporate this perspective into their management.
To create customer and social value through its business activities while enhancing corporate value, Fujitsu identifies key issues based on the interrelationship between its business activities and society and the environment, and integrates them into its management and business strategies.
Through its materiality initiatives, Fujitsu advances the creation of customer and social value while expanding business opportunities and helping mitigate and avoid key management risks.
By integrating business and sustainability, Fujitsu aims to realize a sustainable society while achieving sustainable corporate growth.
Updated Our Materiality with a View to 2035
Materiality refers to the key issues that companies must prioritize to achieve sustainable growth. Companies identify the themes that are particularly important to their management and business from among the various issues they face and incorporate them into their strategies and decision-making.
Fujitsu integrates materiality into its corporate and business strategies and positions it as a critical management foundation for creating customer and social value through its business activities, expanding business opportunities, and reducing or avoiding risks.
In fiscal 2026, Fujitsu formulated Management Vision 2035, which covers the ten-year period through fiscal 2035 and sets out the direction for technology-driven value creation. Since identifying its materiality in 2018, Fujitsu has continuously reviewed it in light of changes in society and the business environment. In this latest revision, Fujitsu reassessed its materiality with a view to 2035, taking into account Management Vision 2035 as well as technological advances, including AI, geopolitical changes, and growing demands for sustainability disclosure.
As part of this review, Fujitsu reassessed and reorganized its key issues from two perspectives: the financial effects of sustainability-related issues on the company and the impacts of its activities on the environment and society.
Overview of Fujitsu’s New Materiality
Even after this review, Fujitsu’s Materiality continues to consist of six key issues organized into two layers: “Essential Contribution” and “Foundation for achieving sustainable development,” as before.
Based on the assessment results, however, we reorganized and updated the scope and positioning of the main areas of focus under these six key issues to respond to technological advances and changes in the social environment and support Fujitsu’s sustainable growth.
In addition, we established a “goal” for each contribution area and foundation to clarify the outcomes we seek to achieve.
This framework more clearly sets out how Fujitsu will create customer and social value through its business while generating profits and achieving sustainable growth.
The review also incorporated interviews with outside directors and investors. Through extensive discussions among executives, we assessed the opportunities and risks facing Fujitsu’s business and identified the areas on which we should focus to create value for customers and society.
